What does being president of AAHA mean to you?
To be president of AAHA is a huge honor. My passion for AAHA is that a clinic that actually uses that set of standards produces something much greater than just a set of checkoff lists. It produces a backbone of what is excellence in veterinary medicine.
What were your initial thoughts about the presidency?
When I first got here, I looked at the presidency and I said, well, what did they really do? And I found out that it's a pretty big responsibility.
What does the role of president of AAHA involve?
President of AAHA requires quite a bit of travel. You have a year where you're president-elect, you have a year of being president, and then you have a year of being a past president. It's really a three-year volunteer commitment, but you get back tenfold what you put into it because of the people that you're meeting all over the world.
How does being president affect your perspective?
They're seeing different ways to practice new innovative techniques all across the country. Gets you kind of out of your comfort zone and puts you into a little different world.
How do you balance being president and practicing?
Being president and practicing is a really nice balance because I'm out here testing those standards and saying how does AAHA work and what really does that mean for our members.
What does AAHA accreditation mean to you?
Accreditation to me is every day. We go by accreditation standards daily and that's really the point of AAHA accreditation is to get a little bit better every day. How can you meet that and then exceed it and then go to the next step and create something much, much more powerful.
What is your approach to leading the association?
I'm always really searching for how can we help and I think that's the key to being very good at leading association is simplifying a journey towards excellence.
Do you have any final thoughts?
I just want to thank the members of AAHA for allowing me to be president for this last year and it means a lot to me to keep doing things for the association.
