What is Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP) Surgery?
MMP (Modified Maquet Procedure) is an advanced surgical technique designed to restore full athletic function in dogs suffering from cruciate ligament failure. It is less invasive than traditional procedures like TPLO and TTA, offering a quicker recovery with fewer complications.
How Successful is Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP)?
Over 75% of dogs undergoing MMP return to their previous levels of unrestricted athletic activity. While some dogs with pre-existing arthritis may experience mild stiffness, the procedure significantly improves their mobility and quality of life. The majority of complications, when they occur, are effectively manageable.
The Procedure
- Under general anesthesia, a small incision is made on the inside of the knee.
- A controlled bone cut is performed to realign the tibia.
- A titanium foam implant is inserted to maintain the new position.
- A bone staple and pin secure the implant before closing the wound.
- Post-surgical X-rays confirm correct placement before recovery.
Recovery Timeline
- Day 2: Begin weight-bearing and gentle leash walks.
- Week 2: Increased confidence in limb use.
- Week 4: Stronger walking ability.
- Week 8-10: Return to full, unrestricted activity.
- 6 Months: Full recovery and peak improvement.
Post-Operative Care
Leash Control: Dogs must remain on a leash for 4-6 weeks post-surgery to prevent fractures.
Individualized Physical Therapy:
A tailored physical therapy plan will be designed specifically for your pet's needs to optimize their recovery. This will focus on restoring strength, range of motion, and overall function of the limb. Soundwave therapy may be initiated around 2 weeks post-operatively to aid in reducing swelling and promoting tissue healing. Further rehabilitation, potentially including underwater treadmill and laser therapy, may be integrated between 4-8 weeks post-operatively to facilitate low-impact strengthening and provide continued pain management.
Exercise Progression:
- 1-3 Days: Short, 5-minute leash walks.
- 4-14 Days: Gradually increasing walks up to 20 minutes.
- 14-28 Days: Continued leash walks with improved limb use.
- 28-56 Days: Gradual off-leash activity introduction.
- 3-6 Months: Progressive return to full activity.
